Is there a way to put the pet back in the gem? /release says I can't release him because he's not in the gem and I can't destroy the gem until I release a monster.

Disband your party (/disband) while your pet is out.

The correct command is /reclaim for any pets.

This will allow you to stay in a party but reclaim your pets. It works great when you are in parties so you do not have to keep making a new party.

/disband will work too, but it also kicks you out of the party obviously, so it should be avoided unless you actually want to leave the party.


Also, don't /pet release, you will lose your pet completely. Releasing is setting the pet back into the wild.
