Companion - 'name' are expirable items that when used, summon a companion along side of you that provides a bonus to the percentage of exp and/or gold gained when you defeat a mob. Companions do not deal damage and do not take damage from combat. They expire after a certain amount of time (~40 days) but can be reset with a Premium reset feature. When you log into the game you should get a message that includes 'Expire Item Resets Available: #' If the time left reaches 0, it will be automatically removed from inventory/vaults. Companions can be acquired using the /spin feature first in the starting city Seamoor at the 'Wheel of destiny'. You can also find them in the Auction House and sometimes dropped on the ground by some players.
